Yesterday was a slow day indeed. Luckily the wind had died down so the harbour was calm. The downside to it was how it made explaining the lack of tours difficult to customers. Even if the sea in front of the pier looked calm, farther the fjörd the waves were 7-8 meters tall. Luckily everyone accepted the reasoning. But that is how my yesterday went, helping with customers who came at the office to inquire about rescheduling and continuing whale identification in the meanwhile.
Today has been a fun day as well. There was some rushing in the morning to get Holmasol back at the pier and ready for action. The boat was full and people were very talkative. Also thirsty, wanting to warm themselves with a hot drink. Rest of the day I spent at the office. I even surprised a Japanese couple, hence the title of this post. On the walls of the office there are posters of different cetaceans, birds and fishes. They were talking to each other in Japanese, wondering about what the texts are on the poster of whales. I just hopped in the conversation, explaining that the texts were their names in different languages. I showed them the humpback whale (zatoukujira) that they had seen on the tour. I even told them about the kp index. But I can't blame them for being surprised. I bet you would be too if you as a Japanese person went to Iceland for whale watching and at the office you meet a Finnish exchange student who speaks Japanese. We'll see what tomorrow brings! But enjoy the picture of Akureyri at night. The other picture is from a nature trail near my apartment that my coworker kindly showed me.
